Australia’s Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has flagged major cost overruns in new electricity transmission projects, with overhead lines up 55% and substations 35% above previous estimates. The draft 2025 report warns these cost blowouts could raise consumer energy bills and delay the 2030 renewables target. AEMO is revisiting project plans and emphasizing local engagement to secure social license and reduce reliance on costly infrastructure.
