On May 21, 2025, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced a $75 million funding call for universities to establish Critical Materials Innovation Laboratories. The initiative aims to accelerate breakthroughs in extraction, refining, recycling, and substitution technologies for essential minerals.

Universities and research consortia can apply for grants of up to $15 million each. The labs will focus on improving supply chain resilience and support the Biden Administration’s broader strategy for clean energy and mineral security.
