At the 2025 Investing in African Mining Indaba, the concept of the Social License to Operate (SLO) emerged as a central theme, reflecting its growing importance in the mining sector. Industry leaders and stakeholders emphasized that securing and maintaining an SLO is no longer optional but a fundamental requirement for sustainable and successful mining operations. This shift underscores the need for mining companies to engage proactively with communities, ensuring that their operations align with the social, environmental, and economic expectations of their stakeholders.

A notable session titled "Is achieving the social license to operate enough to future-proof African mining?" featured insights from experts like Alex Khumalo of the Minerals Council South Africa and Dinah Asare of Kinross Gold Corporation. The discussion highlighted that while obtaining an SLO is crucial, it must be complemented by genuine community development efforts, transparent communication, and a commitment to long-term partnerships with local populations. Such approaches not only mitigate risks but also foster trust and shared value between mining companies and the communities they operate in.

Furthermore, the Indaba recognized mining communities and indigenous peoples as key stakeholders, marking a significant step towards inclusive and responsible mining practices. This acknowledgment reflects a broader industry trend where companies are expected to go beyond mere compliance, actively contributing to the well-being and development of their host communities. By embracing this holistic approach, mining operations can achieve resilience, social acceptance, and long-term success in an increasingly conscientious global market.
