The 2nd Annual Mining Social License Summit, hosted by the University of Arizona’s School of Mining & Mineral Resources from April 22–24, 2025, in Tucson, convened a diverse assembly of stakeholders -including industry leaders, policymakers, Indigenous representatives, academics, and nonprofit organizations- to delve into the evolving dynamics of the mining sector. The summit emphasized the critical importance of building and maintaining a Social License to Operate (SLO), focusing on responsible mining practices that balance economic development, community well-being, and environmental stewardship.

Key discussions at the summit centered on Indigenous community engagement, workforce development, regulatory challenges, technological innovation, and sustainable mining practices essential for meeting the growing demand for minerals crucial to the clean energy transition and national security. Arizona State Mine Inspector Paul Marsh highlighted Arizona's pivotal role, noting that the state produces over 74% of the nation's copper, a mineral integral to green energy and national infrastructure.

The summit also underscored the University of Arizona's commitment to fostering open, evidence-based dialogue on the role of mining in a just and sustainable future. By leveraging interdisciplinary research, community partnerships, and technical expertise, the university aims to ensure that the path to progress in mining is informed, inclusive, and grounded in real-world solutions.
