In July 2025, Peru’s central bank warned that mining protests could shave 0.2 percentage points off monthly GDP, as informal miners blockade roads in response to their removal from the REINFO registry. Disruptions to copper transport from MMG’s Las Bambas and Hudbay’s Constancia underscore the fragility of Peru’s mining supply chains when social license is fractured. While aimed at curbing illegal mining, the government’s actions lacked consultation—prompting backlash from miners vital to local economies. The crisis reveals that maintaining macroeconomic stability requires inclusive dialogue and a more cohesive approach to formalization.
