On May 22, 2025, the Queensland government rejected the Forest Wind project, a $1 billion proposal to build one of Australia’s largest wind farms inside a state forest. The project had received major backing, including from GE Renewable Energy, but faced environmental opposition over bushfire risks, koala habitat impacts, and lack of public transparency.
The government cited biodiversity protection and fire hazard concerns in its rejection. Renewable energy advocates called for reforms in project vetting to avoid future breakdowns between policy ambition and permitting realities.
