In early July 2025, Ofgem granted provisional approval for a £24B investment package to modernize the UK’s gas and electricity networks—£15B for gas and £9B for grid upgrades. The plan aims to integrate 126 GW of new clean energy by 2030 and support electrification goals. While projected to raise household bills by £104/year by 2031, long-term savings are expected. Still, concerns about affordability and equity persist. Ofgem has embedded consumer oversight and cost-control measures, acknowledging that public trust and social license—not just engineering—will determine the success of this landmark energy transition effort.
